What you should expect
Barreling through puddles, creeks, and streams, running up mountains and through tall grass every adventure hound needs a trail pack and Hurtta makes sure they made the very best pack for that job! My pack and I are super lucky to have such a great relationship with Hurtta they send us all the coolest trail gear and we are always so happy to test and review for them! I’ve been using the harness from the Hurtta trail pack on our walks and short hikes and I love it!! I recently used the pack on one of our longer hikes and on an 3-night camping trip which we hiked all around Canyon Creek near the Arizona Mogollon Rim. We tested it through creek crossings and tall grass, and we loved everything about it!

The Trail Pack from Hurtta comes in a Small, Medium and Large
Goose weighs 40 pounds and even though he is an australian shepherd he is on the smaller side. So when I measured him the usual medium that an australian shepherd would wear was too large for him.
We made sure to carefully measure him and follow the Hurtta measuring guide and found the small pack would work best.
Goose is wearing the small Hurtta Trail Pack, and it fits him perfectly!

Design: Rating 4.5/5
The Hurtta Trail Pack comes in one color, so if color is important to you then sorry this might not be the pack for you. But the black color made it look sporty and sleek it reminded me of my Gregory pack. With the design you could tell it was well thought out and you could see it had a streamline European design. Once the pack was full the weight was distributed evenly, and Goose went about his business of being the lead trail dog with out a care in the world. The detachable bags are easy to put on and take off, but its a little difficult to take the saddle bags off when the pack is full but not impossible. I think it just takes practice, the interlocking devices that are used to keep the saddle bags on are strong and kept the pack on with out failing. I liked how this pack was a perfect dual purpose pack, you could take the saddle bags off once you got to camp and use the wiggle proof harness to tie up your pup while you get camp set up. The harness was great for taking Goose out on short hikes that didn’t require him to carry anything. Another great feature the harness can be used as a restraint-system in the car to and from your adventures, according to the company but (we didn’t use it in this way). The harness is light weight and has great breath-ability with the top of the harness being very well ventilated with a mesh like material. I gave the design a 4.5 cause of color and no daisy chain on the pack for a sleeping pad.
Quality: Rating 5/5
The quality of this pack is made with some very nice high-end textiles, all the materials from the harness to the saddle bags are well thought out. The water proof zippers and saddle bags was a huge positive as we may not get lots of rain here in the desert we do have creeks, and streams that we always try to hike next to and 99.9% of the time Goose will be in the water getting wet. So with the added protection of the saddle bags not taking on tons of water is a fantastic feature. The bottom of the Saddle bags also had a great durable material that was great at withstanding abrasions.
Function: Rating 4.5/5
So putting on the saddle bags when the harness is off the dog is very easy and I have zero complaints but once the harness and pack is on the dog detaching the bags and then putting them back on with the harness on the dog proved to be some what of a task. It got easier once I figured it out but it was still a pain some times. Maybe if there could be a better way for the bags to be attached it could solve this minor problem. Also I, would like the handle to be a bit beefier making lifting or assisting easier for the human. The small stash pocket on the outside of the pack and internal organization elastic loops helps to organize smaller items. The bright reflectors on this pack was perfect in low light, which I felt like was very important sense this pack is currently only available in black. The Chest plate on the harness is strong and looks very comfortable and I didn’t see any sores form rubbing.
Overall: Rating 4.5/5
I really enjoyed this pack, the materials stood up to Goose and his ability to find every rock and slam his pack against, I also really love the waterproof zippers and material the pack is made out of. If your looking for a well made pack that can also double as a functional harness then the Hurtta trail pack is for you. It is a bit pricey but you do get a lot of functionality out of it. There is only two sizes to choose from but Hurtta does a great job at making sure that all the adjustment points make sure you get the perfect fit for your dog. The only two things I could see improvement for was only one color option and no daisy chain to attach anything to the pack but those are minor cosmetic things. The Trail Pack from Hurtta is a must for long day hikes or short over nighters if you want your dog to carry his own food and water this pack is what your looking for. Goose loves working when we hike and it fulfills his need to work and do a job.

This looks like a great pack! Very functional and stylish too. We actually just reviewed another brand of dog backpack.
Great photos! Looks like a nice adventure pack.
It’s so nice that today there are options for folks who want to offer functional and stylish back packs for their dogs.
What a great looking pack! I recently bought a back pack for Miss Edie. We haven’t given it a trial run yet due to the extreme temperatures, but I can’t wait for the fall to try it out!
Gorgeous photos! That seems like a great pack — Henry is too small and we unfortunately have too little nature in our life, but I’m definitely going to check the brand out. Can I come along on those beautiful adventures?!
I’ve been trying to find a pack small enough for Matilda, it looks like this wouldn’t work, but I think Cow would like it. It looks like a quality product, I love that it works as a harness too.
I really wish these things came for the xxs crowd! Monte could carry his own supplies!! LOL!
It looks a good sturdy pack, durable and hardworking. with your active dogs I bet you are glad its well made. When a dog rushes about through tough terrain having a wel made pack is a real asset.

I love Hurtta! They make such amazing products! My Chihuahuas have a couple different jumpsuits and jackets from Hurtta, and that probably won’t be the end of their collection….
Those packs look nice and sturdy. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll fit Mr. N. I’ve been looking for a while.
What a great accessory for hiking!
I can see why hikers like these! My dogs are so small it wouldn’t be fair to ask them to carry anything.
These packs look great for a dog. Nice and sturdy and really cute!
I love the story and photos behind your review of this very versatile pack!
What a great looking pack, we love Hurtta products! Goose looks just like Torrey from Tales from the Back Road. Love Dolly
We are huge hikers so we’re always interesting in learning about new gear. This train pack is really nice, and it’s amazing that it could be used as a harness in the car! That’s a great unique feature.

Great description of the pack, its features and your experiences. I appreciate your thorough description and explanation of both the positive and not so positive features. I’d love to collaborate with Hurtta, I’ve heard great things about them. Do you have a contact person you think I should be in touch with?
