Winter has finally come to the desert, and it came with a vengeance the temps have dipped down into the teens up north and it’s pretty fridged for us desert dwellers and our desert dogs. So our friends over at Hurtta North America sent over the Extreme Warmer for us to test and review.
Colors: Granite Gray
Size: Dante (26″) Goose (22″)
Keeping Goose and Dante safe when we go visit the snow is always my top priority, then we can run around and have fun! Dogs can get hypothermia and frostbite when exposed to snow and ice for prolong periods of time. So if you have a snow trip planned to play, x-country ski or snowshoe remember your best friend needs protection from the elements and Hurtta’s Extreme Warmer will take care of them. (Remember to add paw protection as well cause salt and chemicals can be on streets and sidewalks but this will also protect paws from snowballs and ice.)
The Extreme Warmer was designed for the active dog in mind and for dogs who are going to be exposed to demanding conditions for a prolonged period of time. With the unique foil thermal lining inside the Extreme Warmer, it reflects the dog’s body heat and stimulates circulation to all their muscles reducing injury and keeping them warm. The polyester lining is smooth and protects long haired dogs from getting their hair in tangles.
The high collar helps hold heat in but with the added tricot hood it takes warmth to a whole new level. The hood can cover the dog’s ears and top their head aiding in added warmth. With the head and neck protected snow can’t get inside the jacket and heat can’t get out.
The shell of the coat is waterproof and breathable, with 3M reflective material piping along the coat for low light visibility. With the sides of the coat being slightly tapered at the rear section helps protect important muscles that actually help keep the dog warmer. The whole coat is very flexible and soft, you also can adjust the length of the coat with the bungee system at the rear of the coat, this will allow the dog to run around comfortably. There is also a clasp in the back so if your dog has a tail this will actually help hold it in place well, the leg straps in the rear of the coat are soft and both Dante and Goose didn’t mind them at all. With added opening for a leash and harness opening, you can easily transition from the warm indoors to outdoors seamlessly.
It’s safe to say we really put this coat to the test when we took it on a 4-day camping trip to snowshoe and stay in a Yurt up at the Arizona Nordic Village, and then to a day trip to the Mogollon rim when we were there the rim saw over 2 feet of snow. Dante and Goose both look forward to their Extreme Warmers and I could tell they were very comfortable in them and loved running around and rolling around in the snow. The jackets are tough and held up well to snow rolls and running through low / fallen tree branches. The Extreme warmers are easy to clean and did a great job at repelling water and slush.
This jacket is perfect for keeping your dog warm during extreme weather conditions and prolong exposure to the elements.
Here are some cold weather tips
- Shaking, cowering, attempting to head back home or to the car? Then listen to your dog, it could be just too cold for your dog.
- Young, old, short haired dogs and wet dogs are the most susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite.
- So remember some dogs can handle it other can’t.
- Don’t leave your dog in a parked car, a parked car can quickly amplify the effects of extreme weather. Durning the winter the car acts like an ice box trapping cold air inside.
- Goom cautiously, don’t shave your dog’s coat this is their natural way to trap their body heat and stay warm.
- Your dog may eat more, the colder it gets your dog may need more food to keep them warm during the cold winter months.
- Get a coat and dress accordingly yes dogs need coats and boots too, and the Extreme Warmer from Hurtta can help.
